Soni Wins Gold and Sets New World Mark

Rebecca Soni of the USA has defended her title and won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the London Olympic Games. Soni blitzed the field to win by over a second to claim her back to back Olympic title. Soni set a World Record in the same event at the Beijing Olympics back in 2008 but lost the record in 2009.

The semi final at the London Games saw her reclaim the World record but it was the gold medal she wanted. It was only a couple of days earlier when she was the favorite to win the 100m breaststroke but was beaten by Lithuania’s 15 year old, Ruta Meilutyte.

Soni set the new world mark of 2:19.59 with Japan’s Satomi Suzuki finishing send in a time of 2:20.72 and Russia’s Yulia Efimova claiming bronze with a 2:20.92.

In other news, Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima has failed to become the gold medalist in the same event over 3 Olympic games when he was beaten in te 200m breaststroke. Kitajima failed to make the podium as he was overtaken by Ryo Tateishi for the bronze medal.
