Lithuania’s 15 year old breaststroker, Ruta Meilutyte has held off all her rivals to win gold in the 100m breaststroke in London 2012. After a controversial start where there due to technical difficulties, the starters gun went off before he had said “take your marks”, Meilutyte was able to settle and bring home the first Olympic gold medal for her country.

Meilutyte got off to a flying start where some of her rivals seemed to be a little on there heels after the start controversy. She led them at the turn and it was a matter of could she hold on or not. In the race was the current American Champion, Rebecca Soni and reigning Olympic Champion, Australia’s Leisel Jones.

In a fantastic race, Soni began to peg back the 15 year old’s lead and virtually drew level in the last 5 meters. The Lithuanian held her nerve to out touch the Americal by .08 of a second and become the Olympic gold medalist which was reminicent of Jones’ effort as a 14 year old way back in Sydney 2000. Jones said after the event that it was a little like deja vu and hoped Meilutyte went on to have a great career.

Meilutyte won in a time of 1:05.47 and Soni came so close in a time of 1:05.55. Japan’s Satomi Suzuki finished 3rd from lane 1.
